A Note About These Images

These are images of a Record Book of the Salem, Ohio Monthly Meeting.

These are copies of the original records. The data from these records and the records of other Quaker Monthly Meetings were indexed and recorded under the leadership of William Wade Hinshaw and published as the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy in six volumes. They were originally published by Edwards Brothers, Inc. of Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1938.

The following is from an advertisement for a CD-ROM of the Encyclopedia.
Almost no class of records, religious or secular, has been kept as meticulously as the monthly meeting records of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The oldest such records span three centuries of American history and testify to a general movement of population that extended from New England and the Middle Atlantic states southward to Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia; then west to Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

The importance of these records cannot be overstated. Not until recently have the vital statistics of Quakers been recorded in civil record offices. Thus, for more than two centuries, the only vital records identifying these people are to be met with in the Quaker records themselves. Fortunately, the monthly meeting records contain extensive lists of births, marriages, and deaths, as well as details of the removal of members from one meeting to another.
"The importance of these records cannot be overstated." However, this ad understates the value of these records. For the two centures covered by these records there were no civil record offices recording information about births, deaths, and marriages. The Quaker records are unique in that they provide information about Quaker births, deaths, and marriages during a period in which very few civil registrations of vital data exist.
