Salem Monthly Meeting

Book of records in consequence of and

The Minute from Redstone Quarterly Meeting establishing the Salem Monthly Meeting Establishment thereof taking place as will be shown by a copy of the minute from Redstone Quarterly Meeting by which it was established being proposed to the opening of the Meeting as follows viz.

At Redstone Quarterly Meeting held the 2nd day of the 9th month 1805 The committee on the request of friends at Salem reported in substance as follows viz.

We of the committee who were continued at last Quarterly in consequence of a request for the establishment of a monthly meeting at Salem have attended thereto are united in believing it may be best to grant them their request with some (? ?) (tion?) the Monthly meeting to be held on 3rd day after the 2nd 7th day in each month, and their meeting the (? ?) day of that week to be discontinued. Which being read is united with and Nathan Heald, John Allman, Alysh Richards, Benjamin Hannah, John Colson are appointed to attend the opening of the meeting in this month. September 17, 1805

The 1st session of the Salem Monthly Meeting

At Salem Monthly Meeting

held the 17th of 9th month 1805

1st. The representatives from the preparative meeting to wit, Samuel Davis and Joseph Wright being called appeared.

2nd Elisha Schooley, Joseph Wright, Thomas Grisel, James Galbreath, Samuel Davis, Zaccheus Test, and Joseph Pennock are appointed to propose a suitable friend to serve this meeting as clerk and report to next meeting.

3rd. The following named friends are appointed to unite with a committee of Middleton Monthly meeting

in finding the bounds between the two Monthly Meetings and divide the proportion of the Yearly Meetings stock and report to next meeting, to wit, Samuel Davis, Isaac Votaw, Elisha Schooley, James Galbreath, Thomas Grisel, and Zaccheus Test.

4th. The Quarterly meetings committee attended the opening of this meeting to a good degree of satisfaction.

October 15, 1805

The 2nd session of the Salem Monthly Meeting


Zaccheus Test named clerk of the meeting

At Salem Monthly Meeting

held the 15th of 10th month 1805 the representatives being called all appeared.

1st. The committee appointed to agree on a friend to serve this meeting as clerk have proposed Zaccheus Test which is united with and he is appointed accordingly.

2nd. Joseph Bailey produced a certificate for himself, Elizabeth, his Wife and four children namely Jesse Hoops and Pinock, from Goshen Monthly Meeting Chester County Pennsylvania dated the 7th of the 6th month last with an endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated the 12th instantly. Isaiah Harriss produced one from Coursound Monthly Meeting, Carteret County, North Carolina dated the 28th of 7th month 1804 with an endorsement from Concord Monthly Meeting dated the 24th of 9th month last, which were severally read and received.

3rd. The committee appointed to confer with Middleton friends (?f ?) on the boundary between that meeting and this and also the quotas for the yearly meeting stock produced the following report in writing which was (? ?) and is united with--"We of the committee of Middleton and Salem Monthly Meetings do agree to propose the bounds between the meetings, from the south boundary line

to follow the State road from Steubenville to Warren until it intersects the Connecticut line and from thence to the nearest township line North to Lake Erie with allowing friends that live near the line the choice of which meeting they will belong to provided they inform the Monthly Meeting thereof and likewise have fixed Salem's proportion of the yearly meeting stock at 8 cents to the $1.00.

4th) To this meeting came David Schoolfield and Rebecca Davis and declared their intention of marriage with each other. The consent of the young woman's parents being had at this meeting the young man is informed that his parent's consent will be expected at next appearance. Joseph Wright and Zaccheus Test are appointed to inquire into the young man's clearness with respect to marriage with others and report to next meeting.

5th) John Batten offered a paper to this meeting condemning his misconduct, which was read and after a time of deliberation thereon Samuel Davis, Isaac Votaw and Thomas Grisel are appointed to pay him a visit and report their sense of the sincerity of his offering to next meeting.

November 12, 1805

The 3rd session of the Salem Monthly Meeting

1st) At Salem Monthly meeting

held the 12th of 11th month 1805. The representatives being called all appeared.

2nd) Abraham Warrington produced a certificate for himself and Rachel his wife and their children namely Rachel, Ann, Hannah, Thomas, Priscilla, (? ?) [and]Joshua from Chester Monthly Meeting in the state of West New Jersey dated the 10th of the 9th month last with an

endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated the 9th instant. (?John Fenhous?) produced a copy of a minute of his (?reception?) from Middleton Monthly Meeting the 9th instant. Robert French produced a certificate from Abington Monthly Meeting dated 26th of 8th month last, which were severally read and received.

3rd) To the ensuing Quarterly Meeting of friends to be held at Redstone. Dear friends, the Queries were read in this meeting and answers agreed to the 1st, 2nd and 9th which are as follows. Viz. 1st Query all our meetings have been middling well attended on first days. Weekday meetings sometimes small. Friends are mostly careful to observe the hour yet some deficiency has appeared. No unbecoming behavior to remark.

2nd) Love and unity appear to be maintained in a pretty good degree but we believe that an increase thereof would be profitable. Talebearing backbiting and (? ?) discouraged; and where any differences arise care is taken to end them.

9th) Offenders are dealt with we believe agreeable to the contents of that Query. Joseph Wright, Isaac Votaw and Zaccheus Test are appointed our representatives so having no more we conclude your friends...

4th) Part of the committee in John Batten's case report that they attended to their appointment and thought that his offering was attended with a good degree of sincerity, the same friends are continued to pay another visit, and inform [him] that he is at liberty to attend our next Monthly [Meeting] if no obstruction appears......

5th)The preparative informs this meeting that Samuel Smith has been treated with for putting away his wife and refusing to live with her and children which he acknowledges to and after a time of deliberation Joseph Wright, Thomas Grisel and James Galbreath are appointed to pay him a visit and labour to convince him of the inconsistency of his misconduct and report to next meeting.......

6th) A few lines more produced from Middleton Monthly Meeting requesting our care in treating with Mary Walton for her outgoing in marriage. James Galbreath and Edward Whiticar are appointed to unite with women's friends in treating with her and report their sense of her disposition of mind to next meeting.

7th) David Schoofield and Rebecca Davis appeared here and signified that they continued their intention of marriage with each other. The young man produced his mother's consent in writing, and no obstruction appearing, they are left at liberty to solemnize their marriage according to good order and Joseph Wright and Zaccheus Test are appointed to attend the marriage and see if it be so accomplished and report to next meeting and return the certificate to be recorded....

8th) Our esteemed friend, Ann Miflin attended this meeting whose company and gospel labour amongst us was edifying and acceptable, as was the company and solid deportment of her companion Mary Harp(?er?)......

December 17, 1805

The 4th session of the Salem Monthly Meeting

1st) At Salem Mo. Meeting

held the 17th of 12th month 1805. The representatives being called all appeared....

2nd) Part of the committee in John Batten's case report that they attended to their appointment and nothing appearing to obstruct his acknowledgment is accepted............

3rd) Thomas Stanley produced a certificate for himself and Unity, his Wife, with their children namely James, Joseph, Benjamin, Judith, Abigail, and Thomas, from Ceder Creek Monthly Meeting, Hanover County Virginia, dated the 12th of 10th month last, or 1805 with an endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated the 14th instant.

One for John Stanley from same meeting dated sametime with an endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated 14th instant. One for Benjamin Yates and Phebe, his wife, with their minor children, namely, Mary, Jemima, and Benjamin. from Westland Monthly Meeting dated 26th of 10th month last.

One for William McConnill from Darby Monthly Meeting dated 13th of 5th mo. last with an endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated 14th instant which were severally read and accepted.

4th) Our beloved friend Richard Mott in the course of his religious visit attended this meeting and all the meetings constituting the same and produced a certificate of unity and concurrence from Purchase Monthly Meeting dated 11th of the 7th mo. 1805 and an endorsement from Purchase Quarterly Meeting dated 30th of same month [His] gospel labours amongst us were truly edifying and acceptable. His companion, John Shoemaker, produced a certificate of unity from Abington Monthly Meeting dated 26th of 8th mo. last. [His] company and service amongst us was acceptable. The clerk is directed to sign a copy of this minute on behalf of this meeting.

5th) The extracts from our last Yearly meeting were read in this meeting and the(? tary) advice therein contained is referred to the serious consideration of next meeting

6th) Judith Townsend produced a certificate for herself and children namely Josiah Caturah and Jesse from Greenwich Monthly Meeting, West Jersey dated 1st of 5th month 1805 with an endorsement from Concord Monthly Meeting dated 19th of the 11th month last which was read and received.

7th) The Committee in Samuel Smith's case not being ready to report is continued.

8th) The committee in Mary Walton's case report that they attended to their appointment, and thought that she was in a tender frame of mind and that her offence might be looked over. After a time of deliberation is united with by the meeting. The clerk is directed to write to Westland Monthly Meeting.

9th) The friends appointed to attend the marriage of David Schoolfield and Rebecca Davis reported they attended, thought it orderly accomplished, and returned the certificate.

10) Samuel Woolman Junior produced a certificate for himself and Rebecca, his wife, from Burlington Monthly Meeting dated the 7th of 10th month last with an endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated 9th of 11th month last, which was read and received.

11th) The general printed epistle being come to hand the representatives are requested to proportion them between the preparative meetings.

January 14, 1806

The 5th session of the Salem Monthly Meeting

1st) At Salem Monthly Meeting

held the 14th of 1st month 1806.

The representatives being called all appeared but two for whose absence a reason will be expected at next meeting. 2nd) The several matters contained in the extracts coming under consideration and after a time of solid deliberation the meeting appoints the following friends to take them into serious consideration and labour therein as ability may be afforded and report to this meeting when ready. To wit, Thomas Grisel,

Elisha Schooley, Abraham Warrington, Thomas Stanley, Benjamin Yates and Zaccheus Test.

Part of the committee in Samuel Smith's case report they have attended to their appointment but he not appearing in a suitable disposition to make necessary satisfaction this meeting directs the committee to prepare a testification against him and inform him thereof and produce it to next meeting.

4th) John (?Jenhour?) requests that his minor children might be received into membership--Elizabeth, Sarah and David--with which this meeting unites and receives them accordingly.

5th) The following friends are appointed to consider and propose a suitable friend or friends to fill the station of Elders and report to next or future meeting (to wit) Elisha Schooley, Samuel Davis, Thomas Grisel, Benjamin Yates and Zaccheus Test.

February 11, 1806

The 6th session of the Salem Monthly Meeting

1st) At Salem Monthly Meeting

held the 11th of 2nd mo.

1806. The representatives being called all were present. 2nd) The representatives appointed to attend last meeting attended this, and satisfactory reasons were given for their absence. 3rd) To the ensuing Quarterly Meeting to be held at Westland, dear friends, Written answers were produced from the preparatives to the first, second, and ninth query and the following agreed on by this meeting to forward to the Quarter. The clerk is directed to sign and forward a copy there of with the other necessary minutes.

4th) A certificate was produced for Abram Davis and Hannah his wife and their two children

Viz. Ellis and Rachel from Short Creek Monthly Meeting dated 20th of 7th mo. last with an endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting 14th of 12th mo. last. One for Thomas Reader and Priscilla his wife and their children namely Elizabeth and Priscilla from South River Monthly Meeting, Virginia dated ninth of 10th mo. last with an endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated 11th of 1st mo. last. One for Abraham Warrington jun. from Chester Monthly Meeting, West Jersey dated 10th of 12th mo. last with an endorsement from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated 8th of 2nd month last. One for Thomas Whiticar from Westland Monthly Meeting dated 8th of 2nd mo. last, which were severally read and received.....

5th Our esteemed friend John Heald attended this meeting with a minute of unity and concurrence from Middleton Monthly Meeting with his prospect of visiting the families of friends within the verge of this meeting. After a time of solid consideration this meeting appoints the following friends to unite with him and proceed in the service as way may open. Viz. Zaccheus Test Abram Warrington Joseph Penock, Thomas Stanley, Samuel Davis, Thomas Grisel, James Gilbreath, and Elisha Schooley.

6th) The committee in Samuel Smith's case produced a testification against him and report they informed him that the judgment of the meeting would go against him. The same friends are continued to furnish him with a copy.

7th) Salem Preparative Meeting proposes Joseph Wright (? ?) to be placed in the station of overseer with which this meeting unites and he is appointed accordingly

in the room of Zaccheus Test who requests to be released.

8th) Salem Preparative Meeting proposes to this meeting the consideration of receiving Joseph Curl's children into membership namely, Caleb Strattan, Naomi, Joseph Elias, James, and John with which this meeting unites and they are received accordingly.

9th) This meeting proposes to the consideration of the Quarter, the propriety of establishing a select meeting at Salem on second day preceding the monthly meetings in the 2nd 5th 8th and 11th months which we submit to the Quarterly meeting. Abram Warrington, Thomas Grisel, Jacob Paintor, Thomas Stanley are appointed our representatives to attend the Quarter.

10th) The following friends are appointed to attend Middleton Monthly Meeting and lay before them the propriety of building a meetinghouse to accommodate a Quarter and report to next meeting, Viz. Zaccheus Test, Elisha Schooley, Abraham Warrington and Samuel Davis.

11th) A certificate was produced for Tacy Mecon from Shortcreek Monthly Meeting dated 19th of 12th mo. last which was read and received.....

March 11, 1806

The 7th session of the Salem Monthly Meeting




Note reference in item 4 to Horton Howard. In January 1800, Mr. Howard along with Joseph Dew traveled from Coresound Monthly Meeting In North Carolina to Ohio in search of a new home for their meeting in the Ohio Territory where slavery was not permitted. Mr. Howard served as the first clerk of the Ohio Yearly Meeting from 1813 to 1815.

1st) At Salem Monthly Meeting

held the 11th of 3rd month 1806. The representatives being called all were present.

2nd) A certificate was produced for John James and Martha his wife, and their children namely, Elizabeth, Abel, and Tacy from Middleton Monthly Meeting dated 11th of 1st mo. last. One for Zadok Street and Unice his wife and their daughter Lydia who deceased before the reception thereof from Salem Monthly Meeting, West Jersey dated 28th 10th mo. last with an endorsement from Redstone Monthly Meeting dated 31st of 2nd mo. last. from Westland Monthly Meeting for Mary Walton Dated 22 of 2nd mo. last. One for Aaron Stanton from South River Monthly Meeting, Virginia, dated 9th of 11th mo. 1805 which were severally read and accepted.

3rd Our beloved friend Samuel Atkinson in the course of his religious visit attended this meeting and produced a certificate from Burlington Monthly Meeting dated 3rd of 2nd mo. last, expressive of unity and concurrence whose company and gospel labours amongst us were truly edifying and acceptable.

4th Our Beloved friend Horton Howard attended this meeting with a minute from Concord Monthly Meeting dated 18th of 2nd month last expressive of unity and concurrence with him in his prospect of visiting some of the families of Friends and others not in membership, which is satisfactory. His company and gospel labours amongst us have been edifying and acceptable. The friends appointed on the like occasion at last meeting are desired to give such assistance as truth may point out.

5th The representatives reported they all attended the Quarterly meeting except one and the Select meeting was granted agreeably to our request.

6th The following friends are appointed to confer with a committee of Middleton Monthly Meeting on the propriety of making preparations for a Quarterly meeting and report to next or a future meeting Viz. Joseph Wright, Zaccheus Test, Joshua Reeve, Jacob Painter, Abraham Warrington, Samuel Davis, Thomas Grisel, Joseph Baily Edward Whiticar, James Galbreath, and Isaiah Mires

7th) The Friends appointed to consider and propose

suitable friend or friends to fill the station of elder or elders agree to propose Abraham Warrington. After a time of solid deliberation this meeting unites therewith and he is appointed accordingly. The clerk is directed to forward a copy of this minute to the Quarterly meeting of Minsters and elders and sign it on behalf of this meeting

8th New Garden Preparative Meeting proposes Edward Whiticar to fill the station of overseer with which this meeting unites and he is appointed to the service.

April 15, 1806

The 8th session of the Salem Monthly Meeting

1st. At Salem Monthly Meeting

held the 15th of the 4th mo. 1806. The representatives being called all appeared. 2nd) A certificate was produced for Enos Ellis and Mary his Wife and their children, namely Gainer, Elizabeth Enos and Mary. (?More?) Ellis from Middleton mo. monthly [sic] Dated 8th of 2nd mo. last. One for Amos Holloway and Hepsiba his wife and their children name (sic) Phebe, Stephen, Rhoda, Job, Aaron, Hilda, Jason, Anna and Elizabeth from South River mo. meeting Campbell county Virginia dated 10th of 8th mo. 1805 with an endorsement from Middleton mo. meeting dated 8th of 2nd mo. last which were severally read and accepted.

3rd The committee appointed to assist or accompany our beloved friend John Heald and Horton Howard in visiting the families of friends and some others reported they thought the visit was to general satisfaction. The clk [clerk] is directed to forward the substance of the above to each mo. meeting.

4th (?) The committee appointed to confer with a committee of Middleton mo. meeting respecting making preparations for a Quarterly meeting produced the following

report in writing which was united with by this meeting. We the commitee appointed by Middleton and Salem mo. meetings having generally attended and solidly conferred on the subject are united in believing that it will be right to request for a Quarterly meeting to be held for the present at Salem and to be distinguished by that name. That Salem be at the expense of one half the house and Middleton its proportion of the other half and if circumstances should make it necessary to circulate hereafter that it then be so held and Salem to assist as much in building at Middleton. 6th Rachel Warrington is proposed to the station of Elder with which this meeting unites and she is accordingly appointed to that station. The clerk is directed to forward a copy of this minute to the Quarterly meeting of Ministers and elders and sign it on behalf of this meeting.

7th The women's meeting informs this that they did not think Lydia Randolf in a suitable disposition to make the needful satisfaction with which this meeting unites the clerk is directed to inform Crooked run mo. meeting thereof

8th Thomas Stanley is proposed to the station of an elder a time deliberation this meeting unites therewith and he is accordingly appointed to that station. The clerk is directed to send a copy of this minute to the Quarterly meeting of ministers and elders and sign it on behalf of this meeting

9th A few lines were received from Hopewell monthly meeting requesting our care in treating with Jonathan Perkins for his outgoing in marriage. The following friends are appointed to treat with him and report their sense of the disposition of his mind to next meeting Viz Edward Whiticar and Benjamin Yates

10th Salem preparative meeting proposes Jacob Painter to the station of Overseer in room of Elisha Schooley who requests to be released with which this meeting unites and he is appointed to that station.

11th Philip Fedrick and Judith Townsand appeared here and declared their intentions of marriage with each other. Samuel Davis and Elisha Schooly are appointed to enquire into the young mans clearness with respect to marriage with others and also to enquire into the rights of the orphan children and report to next meeting

12th Salem preparative reports that friends of Springfield requests that a meeting for worship may be held amongst them, after a time of deliberation this meet[ing] appoints the following friends, to sit with them and report their sense of the propriety of such a request being granted Viz., Abraham Warrington, Elisha Schooly, Zaccheus Test Zadok Street, Thomas Grisel and James Galbreath

13th The following friends are appointed to consider of and provide a suitable number of books for recording the minutes and births and burials and certificates of removals and produce when ready. To wit, Thomas Stanley and Abraham Warrington.

14th A friend on behalf of the committee appointed to take into consideration the building a house to accommodate a quarterly meeting reported they thought a house 45 feet by 70 would be necessary. The following friends are appointed to join a committee of Middleton monthly meeting, in consideration of the expenses and what materials to build with, and which would be best to build with, and report to next meeting, Viz. Jacob Painter Abraham Warrington, Jonathon Evans Samuel Davis Isaiah Harris and Anthony Morris.

May 13, 1806

The 9th session of the Salem Monthly Meeting



Zaccheus Test requests to be released from the position of clerk.

1st) At Salem Monthly meeting

held the 13th of the 5th month 1806

2nd) Moses Stanley produced a certificate from Ceder creek monthly meeting dated 12th of 10th mo. 1805 with an endorsement from Middleton monthly meeting dated 8th of 3rd mo. last, One for Stephen McBride, and Hannah his wife and their children namely James, Jeremiah, (?Emma?) Mary, Hannah, Samuel, Andrew, Betty and Abraham from Hopewell monthly meeting dated 3rd of 3rd mo. last. One for Isaac Jackson and Ann his wife from Hopewell monthly meeting dated 3rd of same month. One for Thomas Whinery and Lydia his Wife from Warrington monthly meeting dated 11th of 1st mo. last. One for Thomas Ball from Concord monthly meeting dated the 18th of 2nd mo. last which were severally read and received.

3rd) To the ensuing Quarterly meeting of friends to be

at Redstone. Dear friends, The queries were read in this meeting and the following answers were agreed to the 1st 2nd and 9th by this meeting.

Answer 1st. All our meetings have been attended by a considerable number of friends on first days, those on other days of the week sometimes small the hour mostly observed. No unbecoming behaviour to remark.

2nd A comfortable degree of love and unity is preserved amongst us. Talebearing and spreading evil reports measurably discouraged. Care is taken to end differences when any appear.

9th) A good degree of care is taken to comply with the contents of this query.

4th) The Monthly meetings of Middleton and Salem taking into consideration the usefulness of a Quarterly meeting amongst us have unitedly agreed, to request one to be held at Salem in the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th months with a select meeting, to [be] known by the name of Salem Quarterly meeting.

5th The committee in the case of Jonathan Perkins report they attended to their appointment and he seemed desirous of retaining his right of membership. The same friends with the addition of James Galbreath are continued.

6th The committee appointed on the request of Springfield, report they sat with Friends there but were desirous of having another opportunity with them which is united with by this meeting.

7th Philip Fedrich and Judith Townsand appeared here and signified the continuation of their intention of Marriage with each other, no obstruction appearing they are left at liberty to accomplished the same according

to good order, Samuel Davis and Zacheus Test are appointed to attend the marriage and see if it be so accomplished and report to next meeting and return the certificate to be recorded

8th The following friends are appointed to take into consideration and propose a suitable friend to serve this meeting as clerk in the room of Zacheus Test who requests to be released. Viz. Samuel Davis, Abraham Warrington, Jacob Painter, John Farmer, and Benjamin Yates.

9th Our Representatives to attend the Quarterly meeting are Thomas Stanley, Zacheus Test, Robert French, Samuel Davis and John Farmer.

Jesse Holloway is appointed to the position of clerk of the Salem Monthly Meeting.

At Salem monthly meeting

held the 17th of 6th mo. 1806

The representatives being called were all present but two. William Morris prevented by indisposition. A reason will be expected for Edward Whiticar non attendance Jesse Holloway produced a certificate for himself and Sarah his wife and their children namely, Joel, Arron Margaret, Eunice, and David from Crooked run mo. meeting Virginia, dated the 4th of 5th mo. 1805. With an endorsement from Middleton monthly meeting dated the 14th of the 6th mo. last. One for William Stanton and his Daughter Deborah from South River mo. meeting dated the 12th of 4th mo. last. One for Jonathan Stanley and Mary his Wife and their children, Andrew, Fleming and Abraham, from Ceder creek Mo. meeting, dated the 9th of 11th mo. 1805. with an endorsement from Middleton mo. meeting dated the 14th of 6th mo. last. The Epistle from our esteemed friend George Churchman was received and read to Satisfaction and the Clerk is directed to furnish each preparative meeting with a copy thereof = Edward Whiticar rendered a satisfactory reason for not attending last meeting.

The committee in the case of Jonathan Perkins report, they had an opportunity with him in company of Thomas grisel and that he was desirous of having more time, which the meeting unites with and continues him under the care of the same friends who are to report of their trust to next meeting.

One of the friends appointed to attend the opening of Springfield meeting reports they generally attended the Opening thereof.

The case of Uriah White continued, the committee not being ready to make a full report

The consideration of the building a house to accommodate a quarterly meeting appearing necessary and after a time of deliberation thereon it appears to be the Judgment of this meeting that a house 65 feet by 40 will be sufficient, if Middleton Monthly meeting can unite therewith = Samuel Davis, Aaron Stratton Jacob Painter, Obadiah Crew, Joseph Rhodes, John Street, Isaiah Harris and James Gilbreath are appointed managers to provide materials employ workmen, and have it carried into effect and call on the Treasurer for money to defray the cost in the following order, one fourth in the 12th mo. next, another fourth in the 4th mo. following and another fourth in the 12th mo. 1807.------

held the 12th of 8th mo. 1806. The Representatives being called were present

James Crew Stanley produced a certificate for himself Mary his wife and their children namely Garland, James, Nathaniel, Gerard, Elizabeth, Jesse, Littleberry and Samuel, from Ceder creek Monthly meeting in Hanover county Virginia Dated the 14th of 6th mo. 1806 which was read and accepted.

Abram Warrington, Joseph Wright and Thomas Grisel, Enos Ellis, James Gilbreath and Zacheus Test are appointed our representatives to attend the ensuing quarterly meeting.

The Committee to whose care the several matters contained in the extracts were referred, reported in writing as follows, an abstract of which, the clerk is directed to forward to the Quarterly meeting: We the committee on the extracts met early after our appointment and attended the preparative meetings, and opened the concern of the yearly meeting thereon. Appointments were made in each meeting on schools, and two schools are opened within the compass of Salem preparative meeting, taught by members and some provisions are making for another at New Garden. No sufferings as yet

New Garden preparative meeting informs that friends on Sandy, requests the privilege of holding meetings for worship amongst them. Therefore Thomas Stanley, Zacheus Test, Isaac Votaw, and Jesse Holloway are appointed to sit with them in a collective capacity judge the propriety thereof, and report to next mo. meeting.

A few lines were received by this meeting on behalf of Westland monthly meeting, which was forwarded to the women's meeting for their care therein

Women's meeting requests assistance in treating with Sarah Johnson (formerly Bu?n) Therefore Benjamin Yates and Joseph Jones are appointed to unite with them in visiting her and report to next meeting, the disposition she appears to be in.

The committee appointed to attend Middleton mo. meeting with a minute respecting altering the size of the house reported they attended, but that meeting came to no conclusion thereon

The minutes for this meeting are in the hand of Jesse Holloway assuming the position of clerk of Salem Monthly Meeting.

At Salem Monthly meeting

held the 16th of the 9th mo. 1806 the representatives being called all answered.

A certificate was produced to this meeting for Robert Thomas from Darby monthly meeting Pennsylvania dated the 3rd of the 7th Mo. 1806 another for John Thomas and Hannah his wife and their son Henry from Short Creek monthly meeting dated the 16th of the 8th month 1806 another for Nathaniel Thomas and Dorcas his wife and their children namely Joseph John Abel and William from Short Creek monthly meeting dated the 19th of the 7th month last another for Nathan Ball and Atlantic his wife his wife and their two children Hannah and Joseph from Philadelphia monthly meeting dated the 27th of the 6th month last which was [sic] severally read and received.

Our beloved friend John Heab produced a minute of unity and concurrence from Middleton monthly meeting with him in his prospect of visiting some families of friends and others within the limits of this meeting, with which this meeting unites, and Zacheus Test expressed a freedom to accompany him which is likewise united with by this meeting
