Walter Dickey, Ex-Director of Law, Succumbs
Atty. Walter E. Dickey, former Portsmouth [Ohio] director of law, died Sunday night after an illness of three months.The attorney succumbed at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Veterans Hospital, Huntington [West Virginia]. Death was caused by complications.
Mr. Dickey had been a patient in a Columbus hospital before removal to the Veterans Hospital.
A resident of Portsmouth since 1918, Mr. Dickey had his law offices in the Masonic Temple Building.
Mr. Dickey was appointed city solicitor Jan. 6, 1930, and was instrumental in drawing up the present City Charter. He served as solicitor until 1939 when he was succeeded by Ernest G. Littleton.
He returned to the post in 1946 and served until Lowell C. Thompson was appointed. Mr. Dickey also served as a city councilman from the 2nd Ward in 1924 and 1925. He was a councilman-at-large from 1929 until his appointment as solicitor in 1930.
Mr. Dickey aslso was a member of the Portsmouth Bar and Law Library Assn.
He was active in the American Legion serving as commander of James Dickey Post in 1928. He was also a member of Koegele Voiture, 40 and 8.
Atty. Dickey, 68 who resided at 1118 22nd St., was born at Fairfax in Highland County to George and Katherine Test Dickey. He was a veteran of World War I. A member of Trinity Church in Portsmouth, he was also affiliated with the Masonic lodge.
In 1922 he married Marie E. Hughes of Portsmouth, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Better McPhail, 1118 22nd St.; three brothers, John, Ernest and Henry, all of near Hillsboro; a sister, Mrs. Jennie West of Belfast, Ohio, and a grandson.
Atty. Dickey was preceded in death by his parents.
Rev. Dr. Bernard T. Lomas will Conduct funeral services Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Melcher Funeral Home, where friends may call after 6 tonight. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery at Piketon.
