and his wife
Eliza Jane "Jenny" Patten
1860-1892
They were married in Columbiana County, Ohio in October 1878. In July 1879 both were condemned by the New Garden Monthly Meeting for marrying contrary to discipline.
Apparently they were both reinstated because in 1880 they were granted certificates to transfer to the Springville Monthly Meeting in Iowa.
After Jenny died in 1892, a Memorial to commemorate her name was published. This is an honor reserved only for Quakers held in the highest esteem by their meetings.
William was a farmer, a schoolmaster, and in 1899 was recorded as a Quaker minister. His obituary appeared in the Quaker journal "The Friend". It is available in the Obituaries Section.
